LSMTA awards STEM subjects Top Achievers and LDTC Announces a Landmark Step Towards Recognizing Top Achievers in Maths and Science in the upcoming year
The 2024 awarding ceremony for outstanding Maths and Science performers during the LGCSE examinations, hosted by the Lesotho Mathematics and Science Teachers Association (LSMTA), is a momentous event currently happening at Mojalefa Lephole - Victory Hall. This prestigious ceremony highlights and rewards the brilliance of young minds excelling in the seemingly demanding STEM subjects; both Primary and High School, and happens in the presence of Ministry of Education and Training, teachers, parents and potential sponsors. However, while our top achievers from the Lesotho Distance Teaching Centre (LDTC) are not part of this year's awards, we are thrilled to announce that the tides are changing—our students will officially begin participating in the 2025 awarding ceremony, set to take place in 2026.
Discussions are already in progress between Mr. Takatso Kumi, Maths and Science Course Writer at LDTC, and the national committee of LSMTA under the leadership of Mr Keketso Leteba. These conversations mark a significant milestone for LDTC's students, ensuring their exceptional efforts receive the recognition they truly deserve.
This progressive development stems from an important realization: LDTC, through its Continuing Education (CE) department, offers exactly the same curriculum as conventional schools. Yet, our students face unique challenges—they study independently, navigating their academic journey without the direct presence of a teacher. Despite this, they demonstrate remarkable commitment and perseverance, achieving milestones that are equally deserving of celebration.
Furthermore, recognizing the importance of STEM subjects—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—we are excited to emphasize the value of these critical areas in shaping future innovators and problem-solvers. Conversations are also underway between LDTC and potential sponsors to establish an internal awards program. This initiative aims to celebrate and reward our 2024 LDTC top achievers, ensuring their efforts are honored even before their inclusion in the national awards ceremony.
Recognizing our students’ achievements not only affirms their hard work but also serves as a powerful source of inspiration. It highlights the unique determination and resilience of LDTC learners and underscores their potential to excel on par with their peers in conventional schooling systems.
Stay tuned as we prepare to amplify the voices and successes of our top achievers at next year’s awards ceremony and through our own internal recognitions. Together, let’s celebrate their incredible contributions to STEM education and the transformative power of independent learning!
